Usher in Thanksgiving by way of this FREE  Electric Film Series screening of the most irresistibly charming film of last year;

If adventure has a name, it must be June Squibb! In the irresistible charmer that is “Thelma” a delightful Squibb plays an elderly woman who takes matters into her own hands after falling prey to a dastardly telephone scammer. With her friend Ben (played by the late great Richard Roundtree) by her side and a concerned and altogether thoughtful grandson (played by an affable Fred Hechinger) doing everything he can to locate grandma before she gets into trouble, Thelma scours the city looking to get back what’s rightfully hers. As directed by a gifted Josh Margolin, “Thelma” is structured like a “Mission: Impossible” movie only instead of Tom Cruise leading the charge, it’s a game Squibb anchoring the movie atop her more-than-capable shoulders. But beyond the sort of cute sendup of the quintessential mission movie, there’s quite a bit more underneath the surface. This is also a thoughtful movie about ageism. Translation; This is a story about a woman who’s treated like she’s outlived her usefulness. At the same time, while Thelma certainly proves her worth, she also learns plenty of life lessons herself along the way and it all makes for a movie that, if you can believe this, is actually even more entertaining than the last two Ethan Hunt adventures. Speaking of which, Cruise’s spirit is all over this! Margolin has suggested, watching his own elderly grandmother climb a flight of stairs is every bit as terrifying as watching Cruise dangle from a high-rise and this film is able to tap into that high concept in the most creative of ways. “Thelma” deserved a much wider audience than it received in theaters last year but for those of you who’ve been fortunate enough to see it, you know exactly how irresistible it is. And if you haven’t seen it, now’s your chance to experience it in the best possible way; On the big screen with a packed house. Per usual, we at The Electric Film Series aren’t just about the movies themselves. We’re also all about film history and context and as such, with each of these screenings, we have a very special guest on hand to introduce the title of the evening and to lead a post-screening discussion.
