Gifted filmmaker Richard Donner proved that a superhero property could make the jump from the comic book page to the big screen in reverent fashion with “Superman,” a film that’s all-too-appropriate tagline suggested, “You’ll believe a man can fly.” Featuring Marlon Brando as Jor-El and Gene Hackman as the villainous Lex Luther, the title character would be played by a then virtually unknown Christopher Reeve who hits all the right notes as both the man of steal and an oafish but endearing Clark Kent. This patient and altogether spectacular fantasy/adventure film is punctuated by ahead-of-their-time visual effects, breathtaking production design, and an unforgettable John Williams score.
