Planet of the Apes (1968) | 2025 Electric Film Series

FMASU’s Electric Film Series returns to The Electric Theater on May 20th with a FREE screening of a legendary sci-fi adventure from the 1960s that you won’t forget. At the very least, it’s a film punctuated by an epic twist ending that had audiences absolutely gobsmacked; 

“Planet of the Apes” (1968)

The great Charlton Heston stars as an astronaut who awakens from extended hyper-sleep to find himself marooned on a planet ruled by apes. And on this particular planet (Lake Powell is a stand in for stretches of the film), make no mistakes; Humans are certainly the minority. This is a sci-fi epic filled with social commentary and grand adventure in equal measure. And leave it to co-writer Rod Serling (the mastermind behind “The Twilight Zone”) to pull the rug out from under moviegoers by way of that aforementioned ending. Beyond that, Heston is all charisma as George Taylor while a fantastic Roddy McDowell hits all the right notes as primate Cornelius. Of course, no “Planet of the Apes” discussion would be complete without a nod to this film’s stunning make-up effects and Jerry Goldsmith’s unforgettable score. Come on out and experience a sci-fi classic that Roger Ebert says; “...Is quickly paced, completely entertaining, and its philosophical pretensions don’t get in the way.”

Per usual, we at The Electric Film Series aren’t just about the movies themselves. We’re also all about film history and context and as such, with each of these screenings we have a very special guest on hand to introduce the title of the evening and to lead a post-screening discussion. This time around, it's a bit of a twofer. Before the film, we'll offer up a special recorded intro from screenwriter/actor/animator Frank Dietz. He's an industry professional with years of experience but perhaps most importantly, he cites "Planet of the Apes" as one of his favorite films of all time. Then, following the film, our post-screening discussion will be let by Red Carpet Cinema co-founder, Jason Jackson. Mr. Dietz and Mr. Jackson certainly offer up two more reasons you'll want to be at this screening.

Be sure to arrive at our screening a little early and order an optional menu item from Riggatti’s to enjoy during the post-screening discussion or, you can feel free to take the pizza home with you following the movie.
