The Electric Film Series continues at the Electric Theater on Tuesday, September 20th, at 6 PM (Doors at 5:30 PM) with a screening of an inspirational and powerful Penny Marshall-directed 90s drama starring Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro;

“Awakenings” (1990)

--------------------------------------------

After co-starring in the hit television series, “Laverne and Shirley,” Penny Marshall would go on to have a reputable film directing career with hits like “Big” and “A League of Their Own,” but she would deliver a career-best effort in 1990 with “Awakenings.” Inspired by a true story and based on the book by Oliver Sacks, this emotionally-charged drama follows Malcolm Sayer, a quiet and introverted physician who would bring a handful of patients out of their encephalitis-caused slumber after years of being in a catatonic state. Among those patients, is a sweet-natured Leonard Lowe (played by Robert DeNiro) who must come to terms with losing several years of his life. This might be the strongest work of Williams’s illustrious career! Likewise, DeNiro (who was initially approached to play the lead in Marshall’s “Big”) has never been better. The screenplay was penned by Steven Zaillian who, just a few years later, would adapt “Schindler’s List” for Steven Spielberg. Everyone on this film is firing on all cylinders and while it’s not a movie that’s often talked about when discussing the best movies of the 90s, it absolutely should be.

FMASU’s screening of “Awakenings” will include an intro and post-screening discussion led by the great Corbin Allred, a wonderful actor (SAINTS AND SOLDIERS, ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS, and Encore!’s upcoming production of "A Christmas Carol”) who also has several years in the medical and mental health field under his belt. Beyond that, he's a massive film enthusiast making him the perfect special guest for this screening.

Be sure to arrive at the screening a little early and leave an optional donation. This donation will get you a delicious menu item from Riggatti's to enjoy during the post-screening discussion or, you can feel free to take it home with you following the movie.  On a final note, don’t forget to spread the word by sharing this event page!
