“Drag Me to Hell” (2009)
—-------------------------------------------
After taking the horror world by storm with “The Evil Dead” trilogy, the crafty, thrifty, and undeniably creative Sam Raimi would join forces with Marvel by way of a trilogy of “Spider-Man” films. He would then return to the genre that put him on the map in the late 2000s with the terrifying and altogether hilarious gypsy-centric horror film, “Drag Me to Hell.” This creative, high-energy genre film finds a loan officer (played by Alison Lohman) cursed after evicting an old lady from her home. Let’s just say it turns out that said old lady isn’t just any regular old lady. Raimi pulls out all the stops in a movie that will have you laughing one second and shrieking in terror the next. It’s a fantastic (and grossly underappreciated) gem of a horror film and it’s also the perfect movie to lead into the 2024 HorrorFest International Film Festival which just so happens to open one day later.
Per usual, we at The Electric Film Series aren’t just about the movies themselves. We’re also all about film history and context and as such, with each of these screenings we have a very special guest on hand to introduce the title of the evening and to lead a post-screening discussion. Our special guest for this particular screening is TBA. Yet another reason to attend! Be sure to arrive at our “Drag Me to Hell” screening a little early and order an optional menu item from Riggatti’s to enjoy during the post-screening discussion or, you can feel free to take the pizza home with you following the movie. We hope to see you all there! Be sure to bring your family and friends. On a final note, per usual, these screenings are free but donations are encouraged.
